With the end of the summer term 250000 children in distinguished Britain occupy finished their time at the elementary schools, and most of them are now looking for work. It is an ever-recurring problem, and but more difficult than ever now.“Hundreds of fourteen-year-old boys in our neighbourhood,” said a working woman to-day, “are hunting for jobs, and playing approximately the streets. My own boy wants to memorize a trade,and I can’t get anyone to recall him. He wants to earn money any way he can, and now he begs me to let him be an errand boy, or which I dont want,as it would not lead him anywhere. I took him to a Labour Exchange to-day; there were lots of other little boys there and nothing for them. The young lady asked one boy how long he had been coming to the Exchange looking for a job, and he said ‘Four months. ‘Do you hear that?!’ said my boy. ‘What’s the use of my applying for a trade? Let me disappear after that errand boy job we saw.’ I heard someone at the Labour Exchange say it was a shame to occupy these children coming here day after day and having nothing for them.
