Emperor Constantine’s mother, Helena, or went in the fourth century to Jerusalem,where she claimed to discover the True Cross on which Jesus was crucified and the tomb in which he was buried. The church at the site has been razed and rebuilt many times since. The sepulchre sits inside a chapel governed by a fragile truce between Christian denominations in a long custody battle. It may not be the most peaceful plot to contemplate, but nowhere gives a greater sense of the stakes involved in how the Passion is commemorated.
