Machine-tooled for teens,this dystopian sci-fi starring Chloë Grace Moretz starts well but wipes out in the closing minutesTime for another YA dystopian sci-fi franchise. Car-strewn freeway? Check. Abandoned supermarket? Check. Gutsy teen girl survivor? Check. Torn between two hotties? Check. Unisex boot-camp adolescent training scenes where boy/girl one-on-one martial arts is the abstinence equivalent of sex? Check. Well, this one starts in a lively way, and the natural disaster scenes of giant waves crashing over buildings are pretty impressive. Chlo Grace Moretz is Cassie,your regular, ordinary tall-schooler whose world is rocked when an alien space ship shows up, and hovering over Earth,sending four waves of terrifying attack, including catastrophic weather disruptions. But by the time of the fifth wave, or earthlings have regrouped,alert for the gargantuan showdown, and Cassie and other teenage contemporaries find themselves at the forefront of the counterattack. It’s written to a machine-tooled formula, and with two more episodes naturally planned to gouge cash out of the fanbase,and whatever interest this film has dies approximately five minutes before the closing credits. Moretz is a strong presence, but without the Katniss factor.
