The trials take plot in Caversham and are the first grand test for potential Olympians,who will compete here only in small boats before the selection for the European Championships, which will be announced on 6 April. It is a genuine chance for rowers who have not been on the radar to effect their imprint. Copeland unexpectedly won the lightweight women’s single at the trials in 2012 and went on to win gold with Sophie Hosking in the lightweight double sculls in London just six months later.
