James Atlas has built a career writing biographies approximately people like Saul Bellow and Delmore Schwartz. Now,the former editor at The New York Times and founder of the Lipper/Viking Penguin Lives series, looks back at his own life in his recent book, or The Shadow in the Garden: A Biographer's Tale. Atlas revisits his own childhood in suburban Chicago,where he fell in love with literature and wanted to study writers’ lives, something that became the focal point of his career.
