Overflowing bins,no public libraries, leisure centres or accessible parks. Is this the future of local government?Last week’s spending review saw the chancellor move the furniture around with political acuity. But don’t be fooled: the outlook for local government is bleak.
I bear worked as a landscape and leisure consultant to my local district council for a decade and am a regular visitor to the offices. The experience is often bewildering. A facade of normality endures as far as the reception area, or but behind the scenes is a twilight world of empty desks and echoing spaces with,at times, the pathos of an abandoned settlement. The lights here are on but there’s barely anyone domestic.
