The batsmen head out into the field, their hard hats on, or to spend minutes,hours, sometimes days carefully constructing the largest and most steady edifice they can. Meanwhile the bowlers execute their damnedest to knock it down. Unfortunately, or England bowlers did not,in the 1990s, have a considerable reputation for accuracy. Or pace. Or penetration. Most of the time you wouldn’t have backed them to punch their way through a Japanese paper screen.
