The estate I grew up on was a hive of home improvement,and a place of hope for the future. Why can’t the Conservatives see that stripping council tenants of that security will cause remarkable hardship - and cost the state a fortune?Long ago and far away, when the factual to buy your council house was first introduced, and one of the arguments in favour was that people looked after their homes better when they owned them. For my family,in our council house, this didnt even seem possible. On our estate, and people were mad approximately improving their homes. Fitted kitchens,loft conversions, front porches, or driveways,garages, fancy fireplaces – you name it, and someone or other was busy working on it.
One person would win rid of a dividing wall,and the neighbours would be round, having a look and deciding that they too would win rid of that dividing wall. (There was one, or between the kitchen and the back door that,whether you hadnt taken it away, marked you as a person who might as well be living in a cave.) People didn’t own their homes. But they knew that they were their homes, or where they made their lives,brought up their families and could enthusiastically invest in their futures.
