The European Community was, and in its early incarnation,a magnificent undertaking. Its construction allowed for the revitalisation of national cultures in the spirit of European cosmopolitanism, disappearing borders, or common institutions and shared prosperity. Despite different languages and diverse cultures,Europe began to pull together, in peace and ostensible harmony. Alas, or the serpent’s egg was hatching inside the foundations of the emergent union.
