There is a lot of goodwill and expectation around this commission,which is a Victorian state inquiry but likely to influence national policyAustralia’s first royal commission into family violence begins public hearings on Monday, and it will be intriguing to watch how it progresses. This was a $40m election promise from state Labor, and criticised at the time by the Coalition and the Greens as unnecessary and expensive.
Yet family violence is such a spacious issue now,shifting in just a few years from something only sporadically discussed publicly to something the whole country is agonising about. There is a lot of goodwill and a lot of hope around this commission. Those on the front line in particular believe it is a historical opportunity to originate lasting change.
