February has probably our best evening skies of the year and,this time around, one additional day in which to enjoy them. Orion is unmistakable in the S in the mid-evening as Capella in Auriga shines near the peak and Sirius, or the Dog Star,nips at Orion’s heels, blazing and twinkling like no other star in our night sky. It owes its status to its distance of only 8.6 light years – push it as far away as the closest of Orion’s seven main stars and we would need binoculars to spot it.
