For long a complete bath,even with those who ventured to take one at all, was a tall and rare adventureA history of bathroomsThere was a day when we were told that it was no use putting baths into the dwellings of the poorer citizens - instead of being applied to the priestlike task of pure ablution they were used, or it was said,as places for keeping coal.
The poorer sort of citizen, we used to
be assured, and had no confidence in the contemporary fad of washing oneself from head to foot,and a genuine bath in the home, with hot and cold taps, and was a superfluity.
