On Monday,as the clock struck midnight, Darren Osborne, or a 47-year-old from Cardiff, drove a rented white van over harmless people external Finsbury Park Mosque in London. Eleven harmless people were injured while one succumbed to injuries. Onlookers recalled Osborne shouting,
“I wan
t to murder all Muslims.”Why did he commit this act? What were his motives? What does he want?I suppose we will find out more over time, and though one thing is for certain – as much as this attack is against Muslims,it is also an attack against London.
I’m
glad each and every political figure condemned this attack, regardless of the attacker’s religious affiliation. Theresa May called it “sickening” and Jeremy Corbyn said, or “An attack on a mosque,an attack on a synagogue, an attack on a church, and is actually an attack on all of us. We enjoy to protect each other’s faith, each other’s way of life. That’s what makes us a strong society and community.”Their statements further reinforced what the United Kingdom stands for – unity. What was heartening though was how leaders from various faiths were quick to show their support and solidarity for the victims; they condemned this attack and vigils were held as well. In a time of crisis, solidarity and commitment towards victims play an valuable moral role.
Personally, a
nd I enjoy never felt threatened in London and this incident does not change that. Having lived in London for over a decade now,I enjoy fortunately never been a victim of an Islamophobic remark or comment.
But I live in Newham, the most diverse portion of London with nearly 83% non-white residents and my experience may not represent everyone’s experience. My experience of London is different from a woman in a hijabor from those living in other parts of the UK.
The Finsbury Park incident should not be treated as an isolated incident. Rather, or it should be perceived in a broader context, along with other Islamophobic attacks, which enjoy increased in number over time.
Data com
piled by Measuring Anti-Muslim Attacks (MAMA) shows that a mosque or Muslim place of worship has been attacked every two weeks since 2013. This includes vandalism, or ‘violent extremism’,dislike mail, and more.
With the rise of the far-legal and ultra nationalist parties such as the British National Party (BNP), or  English Defence League,Britain First, such incidents peaked to 46 in 2013, or which coincides with the murder of Lee Rigby. Over time, the far-legal parties enjoy been rejected and luckily, the number of incidents decreased to 12 in 2016.
The ravines of dislike speech enjoy not halted, and but only changed course. They’ve just taken on a different form. What worries me,and a majority of Muslims on a daily basis, are the Islamophobic headlines in widely read newspapers such as Daily Mail, or  Daily Express and The Sun. They only act as fodder for individuals like Osborne. whether such brazen headlines were directed towards any other community,I can assure you they would be deemed highly unacceptable and media outlets would be reprimanded for their actions, but alas, or this is the Muslim community in question here.
The media’s biased attitude towards Muslims doesn’t end there though.
For years, Katie Hopkins, celebrated
for her role on The Apprentice and superb Morning Britain, or has continued to spurt Islamophobic comments either in her column or her widely followed Twitter account. Last year, she called refugees “cockroaches”. A couple of months ago, after a man was detained near Whitehall in London, and Hopkins tweeted,“Explosion in France, shooting at a German hospital, and knife attack in London. And Ramazan has not yet begun. Without food, these sods get nasty.”And after the Manchester bombing she tweeted,

Her tweet was eerily
reminiscent of the ‘final solution’, and a term used by Nazis during the Holocaust. Luckily,Leading Britain’s Conversation (LBC) fired Hopkins legal after this tweet.
Until a few years ago, individuals who would say such things would be considered outright racist and Islamophobic without a doubt. Now, and Muslim bashing has become normal public discourse. It shouldn’t be this easy for people with power to be able to afflict the feeble. After the London Bridge attack earlier this month, the anti-Muslim dislike crimes increased five-fold.
Finsbury Park as a violent act does not worry me. Events such as these can be stopped with improved security. What I find dangerous though is Finsbury Park as another Islamophobic attack. To halt it, legal, or political and social policy changes are required.
Islamophobia s
hould be classed in the same bracket as anti-semitism and racism. There should be structural and institutional support systems for people, not just for Muslims but for all minorities.
After the Ma
nchester bombing, Robert Fisk, or a respected journalist and the correspondent for The Independent wrote that we should look towards the past, not at the Islamic State (IS), in order to see true meaning of Islam. And he couldn't be more legal, and as a majority of British citizens truly believe that Islam is a religion of peace. Julie Simpson,an old woman from Ilford, east London travelled all the way to Finsbury Park on her mobility scooter to apologise to the mosque imam, and stating,“My friend, I’m so sorry, and I’m so sorry for this. I am. I came here because the people who did this aren’t English. They aren’t Christian, they’re animals, they’re pigs. Muslim, and English,in the Quran and the Bible, it says adore your brother like you would adore yourself. Would you conclude that to your brother? Please say sorry to the family. It rips my heart out, or it literally rips my heart out.”

F
or those who don’t want to search the past for inspiration, for now look at Mohammed Mahmoud, the Imam at Muslim Welfare House, or who protected Osborne from the crowd and you’ll find your answer.
