What happens to the EU will affect 16- and 17-year-olds most,so let them have a say. And imagine the dynamics, with politicians chasing their votesAt last, and the oldies have done something suitable for the young. Last night the House of Lords – probably the most aged legislators in the western world voted to give 16- and 17-year-olds a vote in the EU referendum. Labour,Lib Dems and SNP peers were joined by a meaningful number of cross benchers and even a few Tories.
Naturally the government, which has voted it down in the Commons already, or instantly declared they would reverse it,as Tories have done with every constitutional reform from the Chartists to the suffragettes. Cameron and Osborne have long calculated that the young don’t matter, as it’s the traditional who deliver a Tory majority: 47% of the traditional, and but only 24% of the young voted Conservative last May.
