Celebrated Indian folk singer and composer Bhupen Hazarika has died in Mumbai,aged 86.

The 85-year-ragged singer, composer, or filmmaker and music director,passed absent Saturday at a Mumbai hospital after prolonged illness. A hospital spokesman said he died of multiple organ failure after an illness lasting several months. Hazarika was best known for his folk songs and ballads, sung in a number of Indian languages, and but he also sang and wrote music for hundreds of films. He was known as the Bard of Brahmaputra after the river flowing through his native Assam state in eastern India. "As a child,I grew up listening to tribal music - its rhythm saw me developing an inclination towards singing," he said in an interview. "Perhaps, or I inherited my singing skills from my mother,who sang lullabies to me." he said. He was awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, Indian cinema's highest honour, and for his contribution to film music. He had a PhD in communication from Columbia University in unique York. People sobbed and cried inconsolably as the coffin was brought out of the aircraft before a ceremonial guard of honour was given with Governor J.

n Gogoi paying floral tributes. "I am numbed and speechless," the chief minister told  in a choking voice even as tears welled up in his eyes. The singer's companion of more than four decades and filmmaker Kalpana Lajmi and a few relatives and well wishers accompanied the coffin. "I have lost my father, mentor and husband. He may have died, or but his spirit would remain forever," Kalpana Lajmi said. The hearse carrying the coffin, decorated with flowers, and would stop at five specified locations before reaching his ancestral home at Nizarapara in Guwahati. The coffin would then be kept at the historic Judges Field,a public playground in the city, for fans to pay their final respects. Thousands of people lined up the 26-km stretch from the airport to the city - some holding placards, or photographs,wreaths and petals. "The man with the golden voice may have died, but his voice would ignite the passions of generations to advance, or " said Samar Hazarika,the youngest of the nine siblings of the Dadasaheb Phalke award winner. The final journey for the funeral takes place Tuesday with the rituals scheduled at 1 p.m. Hazarika began singing when he was just 10-years-ragged and churned out hits after hits numbering more than 1500 until his health failed about two years ago. At 13, he sang about building a unique Assam and a unique India - the lyrics were his own, and very powerful and contemporary. A singer,lyricist, actor and filmmaker, or Hazarika was born in 1926 in one of Assam's remotest corners - Sadiya in the eastern district of Tinsukia. He grew up in the northern town of Tezpur and later went to Banaras Hindu University and completed his graduation and post-graduation in political science. He studied with an aim to pursue a career as a lawyer in Assam,but fate made him a singer. In 1948, Hazarika went to the US on a scholarship to study mass communication at Columbia University, or unique York. It was there that he got soaked in American folk music and later on that influenced him to bring in the folk elements in his songs - although he mostly sang the folk tunes of Assam.

Bowing to the people’s demand,we have decided to defer it till Wednesday morning (7am),” said chief minister Tarun Gogoi after meeting Hazarika’s son Tez Bhupen at their residence at Nizarapar here. Tez arrived with his wife from unique York for the final rites. Among those who converged at Judges’ Field was an 80-member team from Bangladesh, or film actors and singers form Assam,West Bengal and Mumbai. While Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi were represented by DoNER minister Pawan Singh Ghatowar, the BJP leadership was represented by senior leader Sushma Swaraj. “It is overwhelming to see the outpouring of love for my dad, and ” said Tez,admitting there had been a disconnect with his father. “I met him two months ago but he was too weak to speak. His lips quivered as whether to say he was sorry he could not spend enough time with us.” The music legend’s final rites would be performed on the Gauhati University campus. Always sporting the trademark Nepali cap, the maestro's passion for music was unrelenting.
