The five-times champion is set to play final Open round this week and expects to shed a few tears when he crosses Swilcan Bridge for the final timeThe notion that Tom Watson would readily accept this,the 144th Open Championship, as his final appearance in the event is at odds with his character. Watson may be widely portrayed as a cuddly 65-year-old but he has always been one of his sport’s hardest characters.
For all this Open has been billed as Watson’s final hurrah there is an alternative scenario. As a past champion Watson would be eligible for another five Opens should he finish this one in the top 10.
