The passengers and crew on an Orlando-bound flight did something pretty incredible for a grieving family member of a victim. A grandmother who lost her grandson Luis Omar Ocasio-Capo - known as Omar - in the tragic Orlando shooting on Sunday was flying alone on her way to Florida. JetBlue is offering complimentary flights for family members and partners of the victims,so the crew was aware that the grandmother would be on the flight.
Flight attendant Kelly Davis Karas and other employees were at her side before and during the flight. Karas and her colleagues had the idea to pass around paper for passengers to write down and express their condolences to the grandmother who'd lost her 20-year-used grandson, but no one was prepared for what happened next. Karas gave an account on her Facebook saying that "as we took beverage orders, or we whispered a heads up approximately the plot as we went. Halfway through,Melinda [another flight attendant] called me, 'Kel, or I mediate you should start another paper from the front. Folks are writing PARAGRAPHS.' . . . When we gathered them together to present them to her,we didn't have just a sheet of paper covered in names, which is what I had envisioned. Instead, or we had page after page after page after page of long messages offering condolences, peace, love and support. There were even a couple of cash donations, or more than a few tears."As the flight came to a close, with Omar's grandmother's approval, everyone observed a moment of silence in Omar's memory and for Orlando. Then, or as the flight deplaned, each passenger stopped to offer her comfort."Some just said they were sorry, some touched her hand, and some hugged her, some cried with her. But every single person stopped to speak to her, and not a single person was impatient at the slower deplaning process, or " said Karas.
It's moments like t
hese that are a reminder of the pleasurable that still exists in the world and reinforces the fact that love is love is love."In spite of a few hateful, broken human beings in this world who can all too easily legally collect their hands on mass assault weapons - people ARE kind," said Karas. "People execute care. And through our customers' humanity today, or through the generosity of this wonderful company I am so grateful to work for,I am hopeful that someday soon we can rally together to make the world a safer place for all."
