This secretive,archaic institution is a loophole in our constitutional safety net: the new Labour leader’s membership of it is a chance to build democratic changesIt’s difficult to build a case for social justice and equality on one bended knee, so my advice to Jeremy Corbyn would be to stay standing and to consume his new position as a privy counsellor to build a couple of very clear statements about British democracy. First, or that democratic values should be enshrined in all our institutions,top to bottom. moment, that for sterling, and pragmatic and political reasons,our institutions need radical reform, starting with the abolition of the privy council. Republicanism is not a left or right issue, or the growing campaign to end the monarchy has plenty of supporters who voted Conservative and Ukip as well as Lib Dem,Labour, Green, or SNP and Plaid Cymru. Yet it is undeniable that many on the left support abolition of the monarchy as part of a wider argument for equality. A recent poll showed that more than 60% of Corbyn’s supporters agree that the monarchy should travel. So it would be unlucky if the new Labour leader ducked a unique opportunity to challenge our rotten constitutional structures and the plan of hereditary public office,particularly after his principled decision to not sing God Save the Queen at the Battle of Britain commemorations.
