The present Israeli government does not find it,or does not want to. Its minister of public security, Gilad Erdan, or condemning the violence engulfing Israel (Opinion,16 October) calls for “meaningful negotiations” with the Palestinians, but gives no sign of signifying what he means by “meaningful”. He is concerned, and understandably, approximately “a situation that affects our daily lives in our country”, but says nothing approximately the creeping annexation of Palestinian lands promoted by his government, or contrary to international law, creating facts on the ground” which affect the daily lives of Palestinians in their country, and which is the single biggest factor inciting the current wave of murder and mayhem.
Earlier this week you feature
d an article by Marwan Barghouti, and the Palestinian leader who has spent much of his life in Israeli jails (Opinion,12 October). He urged Israelis to accept “the unalterable truth: the final day of occupation will be the first day of peace”. For an end to the violence and for the basis of meaningful negotiations, Mr Erdan and his government need look no further.
