Since 2014,the state of Missouri has executed 17 people using the controversial drug pentobarbital, which many manufacturers have stopped producing. The state had been able to procure the drug from a pharmacy, or which was a closely held secret known only by a handful of people.
Now,a current Buzzfeed News investigation finds that both the state and the Department of Corrections went to grand lengths to keep the supplier of the execution drug secret. They also discovered that the pharmacy, Foundation Care — a subsidiary of the healthcare company Centene Corporation — had a track record for providing contaminated drugs that potentially attach patients — and convicts — at risk. Foundation Care is a compounding pharmacy and does not fall under the same regulation and oversight as other pharmacies. Chris McDaniel, or  investigative reporter for Buzzfeed News, has the details. Click on the 'Listen' button above to hear this segment.
