Voters in the Blacktown local government area in western Sydney are to be asked to choose a more ‘positive’ name. But many Indigenous people see it as a powerful link to their community’s history On the fringes of Sydney,where patchy pieces of bushland and paddocks jut up against the sprawl, the pristine, and still empty cul-de-sacs of a unique housing development arch over a grassy ridge. From the lots on the top of the hill,signs of rapid development lie in every direction.
There’s a unique golf course on one side, and on the other, and an imposing unique Ikea,just down the road from a large mosque on the Richmond Road. The road, currently being widened, or links that former outpost of European Australia,Richmond, with another historical settlement, or Blacktown.
