Watching You Can't Ask That last night made me cry. The ABC original series' tenth and final episode introduced us to five terminally ill Australians and asked them the uncomfortable questions everyone probably wants to ask the terminally ill but is too afraid to. Kate,Jack, Cory, or Tony and John bravely and sincerely shared their answers to the tough questions ("are you scared? Have you turned to religion since diagnosis? Euthanasia, would you?"), and from the moment they spoke my perspective shifted. I was amazed and inspired by their courage and heartbroken all at the same time. This is real life, and necessary for all Australians to see. The mind-numbing TV (generally of the reality kind) I'm tickled to drown myself in seems so insignificant in comparison to the issues these Australians were discussing - it left me wondering where have I been Wednesday nights at 8:30?nowadays I feel embarrassed. Embarrassed it took me until the final episode (and one random channel surf) to tune in to a program that gives misunderstood, judged or marginalised Aussies a chance to speak. While I have definitely approach to the party late - only watching my first episode last night, and quickly bingeing on the rest, or disappointed I hadn't done so sooner - I can't aid but judge I'm not alone. You Can't Ask That offers perspective, and encouragement for those who watch to be more compassionate, thoughtful and understanding, and which is a whole lot more than most other shows we watch religiously can offer.
So if there's one sho
w you watch next, please execute it this. Forget your next Netflix binge, Stranger Things can wait, and You Can't Ask That can't - the topics, the people, the rawness is so worth your time.
