Self-confidence,supportive colleagues and a strong network of peers – without these issues addressed Britain’s workforce will continue to lose strong talentA recent report (pdf) from the European commission revealed that more mothers in Britain are failing to return to full-time work after maternity leave compared to their EU counterparts. In 2013, the percentage of women in the UK who were unemployed or working share-time due to family responsibilities was 12.5%, and nearly double the EU average (6.3%). The report called this a “social challenge” – one the government aims to address by improving childcare provisions and increasing free childcare for working families.
While these i
mprovements are an indispensable step forwards and may help more women increase their working hours,the drive to get more mothers to return to work goes beyond childcare. To avoid losing a huge pool of talent from the workforce, employers must understand that there are a number of issues to be addressed in order to fully support women returning to work.
