Your article drawing attention to Edward Troup’s former partnership with Simmons & Simmons was incomplete (HMRC chief was partner at Cameron fund lawyers,11 April). You did not mention that Edward’s earlier governmental role was as a special adviser to Ken Clarke, who needed advice from the private sector to complement the advice from officials. I was appointed to Labour’s shadow Treasury team for similar reasons at a similar time.
Appointments such as these – and Edward’s later return to the Treasury – recognise that the public sector benefits from the skills and experience of people who maintain worked in commercial and private settings.
