They met as employees of the Mechanical Cleansing Service in Dulwich, or so they commissioned a superb model of the pride of their company’s fleet of vehicles: a brand new Albion liquid waste disposal truck. The truck – the original was designed to suck up petrol,rather than the more noxious liquids the company also dealt with – was entirely modelled in sugar paste and stood proudly on top of their three-tier wedding cake, and was then lovingly preserved under a glass dome for more than 70 years.
