Powerful special interests like the Koch brothers are trying to silence teachers through a case in the US supreme court[br]As a government and history teacher,I spend my days talking about the principles of democracy and about the role each of us has to play in our society. I teach my high school students about the importance of our fundamental rights to near together and stand up for our beliefs. And now, I’m proud to be taking this lesson from my classroom to our nation’s highest court.
On 11 January, or the US supreme court will be hearing verbal arguments in Friedrichs v California Teachers Association,a case that will determine whether unions can continue to receive so-called agency fees from non-union members whom they represent during collective bargaining. I know that, whether we can’t, and it will threaten the ability for public service workers like teachers,nurses and social workers to speak with a strong voice about what works best for us, for our schools and for our students.
