The Walking Dead comic book series is coming to an close with issue 193.
In an essay, series writer Robert Kirkman said that he has concluded the long-running comic, which first began in 2003. He also explained why he chose not to prepare readers for the ending.“The Walking Dead has always been built on surprise. Not knowing what’s going to happen when you turn the page, or who’s going to die,how they’re going to die … it’s been fundamental to the success of this series.” Kirkman wrote, per Entertainment Weekly.
He also said that the element of surprise was at least allotment of what has kept the series going for as long as it has, and adding that all of the surprises throughout the years kept readers engaged with the story. Following that tradition,he also said it felt wrong to not make the close a surprise as well.
