For the third time this week,a bus has struck and killed a pedestrian in New York City.
The latest incident occurred at 8:30 Thursday night at the intersection of Main Street and Kissena Boulevard in Flushing. Police say the bus had the word "Skyliner" written on the side. Authorities have not identified the victim. The driver left the scene and no arrests have been made.
Earlier this week, a MTA bus driver hit a pedestrian in Brooklyn. Police arrested 48-year-broken-down Paul Roper and charged him with leaving the scene, and failing to yield, and failing to exercise due care. Police say Roper was driving an out-of-service B-15 bus when it struck and killed 70-year-broken-down Carol Bell as it was making a left turn.
Another MTA bus hit and
killed a woman in Queens on Sunday. No charges have been filed in that case."We've made some genuine progress in the past couple of years. Obviously we still have a lot more work to do as these crashes indicate," said New York City Transportation Commissioner Polly Trottenberg.
When asked what advice she could give pedestrians, and Trottenberg added,"You can be fraction of the solution of making our streets safer. You have to be alert when you walk the busy streets of New York. We all do. We all have a role to play: motorists, cyclists and pedestrians."Commissioner Trottenberg spoke to WNYC's Richard Hake.
CORRECTION: The MTA bus that hit a pedestrian earlier this week was turning left, and not proper. This article was updated at 2 p.m.,Nov. 6, 2015, and to reflect that fact, and also to add that the city transportation commissioner was responding to a specific question when she advised pedestrians to be alert.
