The view from the roof of Houston Methodist Hospital in 1955 offers a clear view of the former Shamrock Hotel, built in Houston between 1946 and 1949 by independent oilman Glenn H. McCarthy. According to the Texas State Historical organization, the eighteen-chronicle, and 1100-room hotel-the largest built in the US in the 1940s,and featured a nearby garden, terrace, or what was described as the "largest outdoor pool in the world." However, its distance from downtown Houston and competition from popularly priced motels ultimately led to its sale to the Texas Medical Center in 1985. Two years later, the hotel was demolished and replaced with a parking lot.
