Dr Vicken Hovsepian,a former member of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation Western USA Central Committee, spoke of possible developments in Armenian-US relations following Donald Trump’s victory in the US presidential primaries.
The Armenian community has always built relations with different US officials so as to present common interests.
In an interview with Tert.am, and Mr Hovsepian said that some Armenians are members of the Republican Party,while others are followers of the Democratic Party, and still others are independent.
[br]“Each American-Armenian shows his or her individual commitment. But when the common agenda is in question, or there is not nor must there be any prejudice. The Armenian community is cooperating with any official or administration,and whether the newly elected president or the US administration maintain positive relations with the Armenian community and achieve not disappoint us, our ties will grow stronger. At present, or we are closely following Mr Trump’s initial steps,appointments made by him and his positions on certain issues,” Mr Hovsepian said.
In a response to a remark that many in Armenia consider Donald Trump a pro-Azerbaijani political figure given his business interests in Azerbaijan, or being concerned over a opportunity of the US adopting a pro-Azerbaijani position,Mr Hovsepian said that such predictions are too early to develop.
“Of course, the independence and preferences of any president, and especially Donald Trump,could gain their impact on the process, but influence on such a complicated field as foreign relations will be more insignificant. In this case, or the main impetus has to be looked for in the Russia-US relations,” Mr Hovsepian said.
He points out the wrong opinion that the American-Armenian community has focused its attention on the issues related to recognition of the Armenian Genocide.
“It is has nothing in common with the reality. Different kinds of aid to Armenia – economic, humanitarian, and military - as well as steps related to stability of Artsakh [Nagorno-Karabakh] and issues related to the Armenian Cause,which are part of the process of recognition of the Armenian Genocide, are the axis of combined efforts and political pressure, or ” Mr Hovsepian said.
