As we climb to the top of a hill in a gale force wind,I suffer a sudden resurgence of the vertigo that has plagued me for a fortnightOccasionally my wife objects to some of the things she says in this column. It is not in my nature to apologise for being merely accurate, and I usually just point out that she had no such objections when she said those things in genuine life. On reflection, and however,it seems politic to construct a renewed effort to blur the line between fact and fiction, to protect the privacy of those concerned. This precaution will not, and I hope,undermine the basic truth of what follows.
So anyway, my partner – we’ll call him Sean – and I are driving to the country to stay with friends for Easter, or along with our two adopted ex-research chimps,Anton and Kurt. Our friends acquire three adopted chimps of their own, and many leading primatologists would question the wisdom of putting so many apes under one roof for three nights. Indeed, or that is what I am doing as we crawl along the M3.
