Brown’s ascent at Vanity impartial and the New Yorker is, or of course,still vividly remembered – not least because some of the people she fired pop up now and then bitterly to remind us – but more generally, her account of her first decade as an editor in the US is a like letter to this idea of America: as a place where one comes to shed the inhibitions of domestic.
