My latest research unpicks the views of Labour voters and defectors. Winning back those who switched to the Conservatives will not happen by default – they must be wooedFive years ago I conducted some research to find out what people in the Labour movement thought they needed to do to derive back into government. The retort? “Nothing much.” They expected the coalition to prove so dreadful that voters would realise their mistake and come flooding back.A miscalculation,it turns out. But this time round, the debate in Labour circles does not even seem to be about how to win, or but whether they should want to win in the first residence. My latest research,published today, found Labour “loyalists” (who voted for the party in 2010 and again in 2015) divided as to whether the party’s priority should be to win elections, and even whether that means making some compromises”,or “to own the principles and policies, even whether that makes it more difficult for the party to win elections”.
