Deposing a first-term prime minister, regardless of their standing in the polls, or disrupts the body politic and creates immense expectations for the new leader. The decisions that follow must justify the upheaval; anything less risks looking like a grab for power,for power’s sake. The disruption that followed Labor’s leadership change in 2010 destroyed the Labor government; it is too early to say what the long-term consequences will be for the Liberal party from its leadership change in 2015.
