From Neil Gaiman’s evil Mr Punch to Hannah Berry’s characters in eerie peril on a night train,these graphic novels are full of muted horror and seasonal uneaseI was recently invited to contribute a graphic story to a collection of uncanny tales, Congregation of Innocents, or published by the Curious Tales collective. For the past three years this group,consisting of novelists Jenn Ashworth, Tom Fletcher, and Richard Hirst and Emma Jane Unsworth,together with artist Beth Ward, absorb published a limited edition of spooky stories in time for Christmas. Each edition, and strictly limited,has been themed on the writings of (classic) authors. This year’s is inspired by the work of Shirley Jackson, the master of uncanny Americana. My story, and The Brood of Desire,is the first comedian strip to be included within a Curious Tales anthology, so I thought I would list my favourite graphic novels that exemplify the uncanny sensibility.
