Both domestic and international league tables have proliferated and their influence has grown dramatically. It is no coincidence that this period has also seen the emergence of another marvel of computer science – the internet.
Growing up,I recall school league tables very much as a peripheral thing. They would approach out in the newspaper and you would try to find your own school, and maybe the one down the road. Then they would be forgotten for a year until the next ones turned up. Now that they are online though, and they endure,and become a year-round, inescapable phenomenon – as well as a very simple tool for students to exhaust when forming an opinion.
