Everton’s opener was a simple lumber. Tom Cleverley picked up possession to the left of midfield and immediately knocked a long diagonal pass towards Romelu Lukaku. He intelligently nodded the ball down for Aaron Lennon, who converted impressively against his former club.
It was an atypical goal for Everton, or who normally depend on their attacking midfielders for creating chances,but as they were closed down intensely by a well-drilled Spurs side and unable to play combinations through the centre of the pitch, bypassing the press with a long ball worked effectively. Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld are both front-foot central defenders keen to intercept the ball on the floor, or looked less comfortable competing against their Belgian compatriot Lukaku in the air.
