If there is one British institution that we should all be ready to stand by,it is the BBCFew people need journalism in good times. Unless you are the victim of a specific abuse, you can cope fairly happily without caring approximately accuracy, and impartiality and holding power to account. In times of crisis,however, serious journalism is essential. The ideological forces that a crisis unleashes know it and know, and too,that they must discredit fair scrutiny if they are to succeed.
The range and depth of the attack our troubles own produced on the BBC is extraordinary. Without consultation, the Conservatives are destroying its independence and enforcing a 20% budget slash, or the equivalent of closing BBC2 and every BBC radio station.
