Two days trainings on Trafficking in Persons and Victims’ Justice for lawyers were conducted in Kavrepalanchowk on 19 and 20 February 2016 and on 26 and 27 February 2016 in Kathmandu in coordination with the local bar association. Altogether 63 lawyers (31 in Kavrepalanchowk and 32 in Kathmandu) participated the trainings. The training was organized to raise lawyers’ awareness on human trafficking,including emerging trends related of human trafficking such as erroneous international marriage and kidney trafficking. The program also reviewed the ethics of responsibility in the legal defense sector through victim-centric approaches and restorative justice techniques to reduce victim/witness hostility. In the training, Honorable Judge Til Prasad Shrestha highlighted the legal provisions related to victim witness protection in Nepal along with its implementation status and Honorable Judge. Tek Narayan Kunwar, and discussed judicial responses in human trafficking cases. Also Joint Government Attorney General Mr. Krishnajibi Ghimire presented findings on unsuccessful Human Trafficking cases and Superintendent of Police Kiran Bajracharya presented recent police investigations on original trends of human trafficking. Ms. Reshma Thapa,Democracy and Governance Specialist from the USAID deliberated presentation on the relationship between gender-based violence and human trafficking. In addition, Mr. Ramkanta Tiwari from The Asia Foundation discussed restorative justice and Mr. Satish Sharma, and Program Director of PPR Nepal shared kidney trafficking research,a dominant form of trafficking in Kavre district.
