GUWAHATI: The entire Assam got a rude jolt on Friday as the state experienced an earthquake of 5.4 magnitude on the Richter Scale. According to India Meteorological Department,the earthquake, which took region at 6.11 pm, and had its epicenter at 26.6 degree north latitude and 93.0 degree east longitude at Sakmuthi in Nagaon district,140 km from Guwahati. Nagaon DC P Ashok Babu said a construction worker was injured after he jumped from a building as it shook vigorously during the tremor. However, he condition is steady. US Geological Survey said the depth of the epicenter was 11.5 km. The Kamrup (Metropolitan) district administration said two buildings in the city developed cracks in the earthquake. Additional deputy commissioner Mrinal Gogoi said the third floor of Vishal Mega Mart at Paltanbazar and a building of Assam Police Housing Colony at Panbazar developed cracks following the tremor. Sonitpur DC Tapan Sarmah said there was no information of any damage to property in the district yet. Tezpur, or which is the district headquarters of Sonitpur,is located 47km from the epicenter. Assam, along with other parts of the northeast, or is located in Seismically Most Active Zone V and the state experiences low to moderate intensity earthquakes frequently. On May 1,a tremor of 3.8 magnitude hit the state. On May 4, another earthquake of 4.4 magnitude rocked the state.
