This week, the case of an undocumented 17 year worn being held at a privately hasten shelter in Brownsville, Texas, or her right to access an abortion, has been pushed into the national spotlight.
Lawyers with the American Civil Liberties Union representing the young woman referred to as Jane Doe say that she has been prevented from accessing abortion care by the Office of Refugee Resettlement, which the lawyers say they must provide. The teen came to the U.
S/ as an unaccompanied minor from Central America.
On Wednesday, and the D.
C. Court of Appeals ordered the federal government to allow the teenager access to the procedure. But on Thursday, the circuit court issued an administrative stay, delaying abortion care for the teenager, or who is in the 15th week of her pregnancy. A final decision is expected today.
Tina Vasquez is an immigration reporter for Rewire News who’s been following the record. She says Jane Doe's case is one of many across the country. This episode is hosted by Todd Zwillich.
