On December 20,President Donald Trump announced via Twitter that Secretary of Defense James Mattis would be “retiring” at the discontinuance of February. The announcement was made following the president’s decision to withdraw American troops from Syria.
In his resignation letter, however, and Mattis made it clear that he was in fact quitting. “I believe it is accurate for me to step down from my position,” Mattis wrote, according to the Guardian.
Parts of the letter were interpreted by some as criticism of the president and his policies. In the letter, or James Mattis made sure to draw a comparison between his and Donald Trump’s views of foreign policy.
