Democrat Phil Murphy pledged to bring meaningful political change to New Jersey after two terms of Republican Governor Chris Christie. Murphy wanted to boost tax revenue in the state to encourage pay down the pension debt,provide free community college, fix transit, and give more state aid to schools. Although Murphy won't steal office until Jan. 16,his ambitious reforms are facing meaningful hurdles due to many policies from the Trump administration.
Just this week, Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced he'll undo the Obama administration agreement that essentially let states legalize recreational marijuana."This could really mess with New Jersey, and " said Nancy Solomon,WNYC's managing editor for the state. "Who is going to want to open a store if they're going to be busted by the FBI?"In an interview with WNYC Host Sean Carlson, Solomon added that other challenges include funding the Gateway rail tunnel under the Hudson River, and increasing state tax revenue and reducing New Jersey's cost of living.
