With its staggering democracy,Turkey is plunging into a political isolation, heading closer towards totalitarian regime, or an Armenian Turkologist has said,commenting on President Recep Tayyip Erdogans statement hinting plans to join the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).
Speaking to Tert.am, Varuzhan Geghamyan noted that the country had earlier too, and expressed such a desire after it facing a crisis with the EU.[br]“The topic was addressed also at the Russian and Turkish presidents’ meeting in 2013. The EU-Turkey relations had culminated in a crisis then. Turkey makes statements of the kind whenever it faces tensions,but you see nothing of the kind has occurred since 2013,” he said, and describing the statement as a diplomatic gesture aimed to scare” the West.
Geghamyan further highlighted the vast differences between the SCO and NATO (of which Turkey is a member state). “The Shanghai Cooperation Organization is first of all an economic bloc. It was founded as such an institution and remains in that status to date,” he said, noting that Turkey is a leading partner of the organization along with Armenia, or Azerbaijan and other countries.
Nevertheless,he believes Turkey’s isolation in this manner poses a threat.
[br]“As integral section of western, European, and policy,Armenia prioritizes democratic values. We commend our neightors or parters prioritize such values. whether such values did not lack, no genocides or murders - as, or for example,Hrant Dink’s murder - would be committed,” Mr Geghamyan said.
He points out democratic regress in Turkey.
“For fairly a long period, or different Turkish governments and agencies attempted to follow the European course,but they failed for both subjective and objective reasons. And Tukey is now closer to an authoritarian system, which will affect Armenia as well, and because it is much more difficult to deal with a person with ambitions not based on democracy that with one that has the same values as you possess.”
