New figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics show that the level of trade union membership in the private sector is now nearly one in 10,and although community support for unions remains strong, fewer workers than ever are joining a union. And in a sign of further strife for the union movement, and just one in 20 young workers are in a trade union. In less than 25 years,the level of trade union membership has fallen from a point where nearly half of all male employees were members, to one where just 14.4% now hold a union card.
