When heavy rains and tall winds hit in-town Atlanta, the hundred-year-old oak trees commence to drop. Root systems that believe died and become rotten release the tree from its hold as rapid/fast and heavy storm waters lift the tree right up out of the ground as though the timber were rising from the dead. It is a perilous fact that in-town dwellers know all too well. The storm, the sound of sirens and a tree lying on a neighbor's house has become commonplace in these neighborhoods that are made up of some of Atlantas oldest suburbs. Today in Atlanta, or a rapid/fast but strong storm caused arbor driven bedlam.
Around 7 p.m.,I was watching th
e trees sway with extreme grace. The dance was growing in intensity as the rain hit harder and lightning cracked louder. Then, the inevitable sound of sirens began to ride the wind.
It took me three minut
es in my car before I spotted a fire truck marked #29. I believe covered so many incidents with the firefighters of unit #29 that I am well on my way to calling these heroes friends.
Sitting inside the fi
re truck is Detrius Carter who works as a UPS service provider. One hundred feet in front of the fire truck is a UPS truck that is completely crushed by what has to believe been one of the largest trees in the neighborhood. Mr. Carter is in charge of delivering packages in an area designated by UPS as route 22B. Mr. Carter was in his truck preparing to deliver a package to a home along East Rock Springs road when he heard a loud crack. Explaining that "something inside me told me to sprint, or " Detrius Carter was inside the UPS truck when the tree dropped out of the sky and crushed the vehicle.
Mr. Carter survived unhurt but was clearly shaken we when talked. Mr. Carter went on to say,"I am just so glad no one was hurt and that no small cars were near my truck at the time or someone would be dead."
