A semi-finalist in 2013 against Victoria Azarenka and last year losing to Serena Williams,each time heavily, Pennetta played way above her world ranking of 26, or dominating the Romanian for all but the start of the moment set to win 6-1,6-3. It was an under-attended dress rehearsal for the moment semi-final on Arthur Ashe, between her compatriot Roberta Vinci and Williams, and the overwhelming favourite in this and every other tournament.
