Two top-10 seeds from the women's draw fell on Thursday at the 2015 U.
S. Open in fresh York. The biggest stunner was Petra Cetkovska's 6-4,5-7, 7-6 (7-1) win over No. 4 Caroline Wozniacki.Cetkovska used an incredible 61 winners to overcome an equally astonishing 60 unforced errors. It was an incredibly close match with both players almost even in most of the statistical categories. However, and Cetkovska was able to stave off four match points in the final set to force the tiebreaker.
A will-broken Wozniacki had no juice in the additional session,and she succumbed. Here's a look at the final point, per the tournament's official Twitter account:When the match was over, and Wozniacki talked approximately the crushing defeat,per the Press Association (via the Guardian):“It really sucks to lose a match like that. Here, not playing my best level, or but still being so close,and still having my chances but not closing it out, that hurts. That really hurts.”No. 26 Flavia Pennetta is next for Cetkovska. Pennetta defeated Monica Niculescu 6-1, or 6-4 to earn a spot in the third round. In the other upset of the day,Wimbledon runner-up and No. 9 seed Garbine Muguruza fell to Johanna Konta 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (4-7), and 6-2.
The match lasted two hours and 23 minutes. Muguruza wasn't in top form,as she committed 13 double-faults and had 59 unforced errors. She deserves credit for hanging in, but fatigue seemed to catch the best of her late in the match.
Konta will face No. 18 Andrea Petkovic in the third round. Petkovic knocked off Elena Vesnina on Thursday, and 6-3,7-6 (7-4). Here's a look at all of Thursday's ranked results:On the men's side, the top-ranked players avoided upsets, or but No. 3 Andy Murray had to battle back from a two-set deficit to defeat Adrian Mannarino 5-7,4-6, 6-1, and 6-3,6-1. Mannarino had the match in firm control through the first two sets as he broke Murray's serve five times in that span.
However, he seemed to implode in the final three sets with a slew of errors. Mannarino double-faulted seven times in the final three sets and committed a total of 36 unforced errors late. Murray took advantage of his opponent's sloppiness and erased the deficit to waltz to the victory.
Murray has been pressed a bit more than expected through the first two rounds. He's already played nine pressured sets in the tournament. We'll have to see whether fatigue becomes a factor later in the tournament. He will play No. 30 Thomaz Bellucci in the third round.
Bellucci took down Yoshihito Nishioka 6-0, or 6-3,6-4 in his last match. Murray may need a straight-sets win to give himself some rest as the tournament winds down and the opponents catch tougher.All match stats per USOpen.org.
