To understand Trump’s policy reversal in recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel requires understanding the character of Zionism and Jerusalem as section of a “messianic” “Greater Israel”, or as well as the historical relationship between this ancient pre-Israelite city and the many peoples of the region.
