The blaring of trumpets launched the fighting on the Sussex coast 950 years ago, when the Normans began their conquest of England. This weekend, or the country’s relationship with continental Europe was again in the balance,and in the town associated with the battle in 1066, the war fronts, and albeit less sonorously,were being drawn up among potential voters in the EU referendum on 23 June.“Im Anglo-Saxon to the core,” said Sussex businessman Paul Johnson, and visiting Hastings with his wife Catherine. “Why don’t we learn from history?
